City, May 22nd,
2019-
IKEA has announced its arrival to Mexico. The Swedish brand of home
furnishing products will open its first store in the country on Fall
2020, at Encuentro Oceanía mall, located at the east side of Mexico
City. IKEA also announced that e-commerce for Mexico City customers
will start parallel to the opening of the brick-and-mortar store.
During
the event for press, influencers, and fans of the brand, IKEA Mexico
executives announced the details of what will be the first store of
the brand in Latin America. They shared the main values of the brand,
as well as the IKEA Concept and Democratic Design, a philosophy that
guides the making of every product of the brand and involves five
dimensions: great form, quality, function, low price, and
sustainability.
“We
are very excited to open in such a dynamic market as Mexico”, said
Malcolm Pruys, IKEA Mexico Retail Country Manager. “This is the
great time for us to announce our arrival, as well as our plans in
the country. Our ambition is to bring the concept of democratic
design to the many Mexicans.”
The
first IKEA store will offer between 300 and 370 direct jobs, in both
the store and the customer contact center, and around 1,000 indirect
jobs. It will be a 23,500 m² commercial space with 3 levels and more
than 7,500 home products. It will also have a restaurant that will
sit 665 people and will serve dishes like the iconic Swedish
meatballs. In addition, there will be a Swedish food market, where
150 Swedish food products will be available.
The
store will also have a rainwater recovery system and LED lights,
among other developments, with the goal of getting the LEED Gold
Certification.
“We
see a great opportunity in Mexico City, since there is a lot of
interest in our products and the solutions we offer”, said Annie
Chandler- Store Manager.
