TUCSON, Ariz. – Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents from the Nogales Station apprehended a local woman and two illegal aliens Tuesday at the Immigration Checkpoint on Interstate 19.
Agents working the primary inspection lane referred a 26-year-old Tucson woman, traveling with her 4-year-old son, for secondary inspection of her Chrysler minivan after a Border Patrol canine alerted to an odor it was trained to detect.
When agents looked in the vehicle, they saw a man and woman lying on the floorboard between the van’s passenger seats. After identifying the couple as Mexican nationals, ages 19 and 21, who had entered the country illegally, agents arrested all three adults and seized the vehicle.
Both illegal aliens are being processed for immigration violations, while the Arizona woman faces human smuggling charges. Santa Cruz County Department of Child Safety was contacted and assisted in placing the child with a family member.
Federal law allows agents to charge individuals by complaint, a method that allows the filing of charges for criminal activity without inferring guilt. An individual is presumed innocent unless or until competent evidence is presented to a jury that establishes guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials welcome assistance from the community. Citizens can report suspicious activity to the Border Patrol and remain anonymous by calling 1-877-872-7435 toll free. Reporting illicit activity could result in saving someone’s life.
